Okay, so the title of this post is very reminiscent of the one from a couple of days ago, but the post itself holds entirely different concept. Well...perhaps not completely different.
Today we pagans celebrate Ostara or, our version of what most call Easter. I won't go into the
differences and similarities between the two, mainly because I think that no matter what your spirituality there are so many common elements that it only does damage to the relationships to point out the differences. Why bother when what it comes down to is your own spirituality and your own beliefs.
So as I celebrate today, I wish you all wonderful beginnings at this time of year. Here's a little of the lore of Ostara for you to contemplate if you so choose. If you don't, well...hang in there cause there's some actual knitting content at the bottom to reward your patience! Heh heh...
*please note that I have taken some of this description from a few websites but it was a while ago that I collected this information so if you are reading this and you wrote it, please email me and I will be sure to credit you!
Ostara...it begins. (pronounced O-STAR-ah) is one of the Lesser Wiccan and Pagan Sabbats, and is usually celebrated on the Vernal or Spring Equinox right around March 21st (although because of it's origins, may instead be celebrated on the fixed date of March 25.) Other names by which this Sabbat may be known are Oestara, Eostre's Day and the Rite of Eostre to name a few.
This is the time when we turn our thoughts to renewal and rebirth as the world awakens from it's cold slumber and fresh growth peeks through with a promise to give more. At this time we think of renewing ourselves. We renew our thoughts, our dreams and our asirations. We think of renewing our relationships. Those we may have lost along the way for various reasons, and those that are still with us from day to day. This is an excellent time of year to begin anything new or to completely revitalize something. This is also an excellent month for contemplating and bringing to fruition anything to do with growth. (One of my favourite and most obvious being gardening!!)
Obviously you can see where symbols like the egg and the rabbit come in. Ever heard the term multiplying like rabbits? There's a beginning and a half for you! Ha ha! Eggs also show the promise of something new. A hatching of ideas and beginning of new life. The flowers that come out this year are scooped up faster than you can say Easter simply because people have been yearning for the colour of daffodils, tulips and crocuses, so they can watch as the flowers explode open with fresh scents and the promise of more to come.
For Pagans and Wiccans, Ostara is a fertility festival celebrating the birth of Spring and the reawakening of life from the Earth. The energies of Nature subtly shift from the sluggishness of Winter to the exuberant expansion of Spring. Eostre, the Saxon Goddess of fertility and Ostara, the German Goddess of fertility are the aspects invoked at this Sabbat.
Personally, my own goals have been to improve my overall health as I've mentioned, renew some relationships or at least add some spark to relationships that have been neglected or just need a little tune up (don't worry, things with Kev and I are just fine! :) ). I am going to set some new goals for myself with my knitting as they've become a little fuddled between all of my projects. (Heh heh, Knitters ADD, anyone?) I have begun a new stage in my life of better handling my responsibilities with finances and the care of myself, my home and my family. I love those winds of change...they always blow so much warmer this time of year. *grin*
Okay, so knitting content...Samus...Oi! I haven't gotten much farther than the last time I posted about her. She's going to be a beautiful cardigan when she is done, although admittedly, I'm worried about the zipper portion. Eek!
Here is where I am so far. I can't decide if I want to be done with the cabling or if I don't want it to end. It is so neat to watch it knit up, but it is TAKING ME BLOODY FOREVER!! Ha ha!
I actually took this picture over the weekend so the strip is actually double this length now! WOO HOO! I seriously can't believe I'm knitting cables, dude...seriously...it's so freakin' cool!
And finally, Akira wanted to pop in to wish you all a wonderful Ostara, Easter or whatever you celebrate this time of year!
All good things,
Morrighana
